Spanish Books for Preteens (9-12)
Posted on | May 1, 2010 | No Comments
If your child is between nine and twelve, you have more interesting options to choose from. By this time, your child’s tastes in
things like books, music, and movies have really started to take shape. Then again, if your child does not like to read—or does not know yet what he or she might like to read—you can find some indications of good reads for him or her by taking a look at his or her other activities. For instance, an adolescent who likes sports may appreciate novels about athletes, or biographies of real-life sports legends. A special magazine issue about the life of legendary football player Pele (http://www.californiaspanishbooks.com/prod_info.asp?id=3937) might do the trick. Spanish magazines for kids can be found, but you do not need to limit yourself strictly in terms of age. After all, many magazines have a great deal of cross-over appeal to people of many different age brackets.

Spanish Books for Kids 3 to 9

If your child is between three and six, you should not expect him or her to become enchanted with the purely verbal aspects of
reading, even though he or she is better able to handle abstract concepts than a toddler would be. Now, this might sound a little odd or confusing. After all, is reading not all about words? Not quite. Actually, reading—particularly narrative reading—is also about actions, i.e. the actions carried out by the characters throughout the story. Take advantage of this when reading to your toddler. For example, if a character dances in your story, you can pick your child up and dance a little bit with him or her. If a character cries or laughs, pretend to do the same. This way, your toddler can better understand that words are not just marks on a page, but are connected with actions, ideas, and feelings. This concept is not only key to getting a child to learn to love reading, but also to understand what he or she reads—which is important for practical reasons, as well. You might also want to try books that offer guidance about situations in your child’s life, such as Mi primer dia de colegio by Becky Edwards (http://www.californiaspanishbooks.com/prod_info.asp?id=108724), which is about starting nursery school.
Now, what to do if your child is between six and nine years old? You can start choosing much more complex pieces such as short story collections. Good choices for you and your child to read together include Cuentos para chicos que no pueden dormir by Anna Maria Pezzoni (http://www.californiaspanishbooks.com/prod_info.asp?id=148435), which can also be a good choice for children in the age bracket immediately above (between nine and twelve) to read alone. It is also one of the most popular Spanish best-sellers for kids.

Spanish Books for Babies and Little ones (0-3)

So you are interested in Spanish language books for babies and little children. Perhaps your family is of Spanish or Latin American descent, and you would like to make sure your child is bilingual, instead of knowing only English. Or, perhaps you understand that helping your child learn Spanish is a helpful, whether or not any Spanish-speaking heritage is part of your family history. In any case, it makes sense to get your child started early on another language to minimize difficulty in learning it later. Actually, if your child can pick up multiple languages early, he or she is also likely to have easier time learning yet other languages later in life.

EL BEBE DESCUBRE ... LOS JUGUETES
Purchasing books for children in whatever language can present a unique challenge today, since there are so many activities and distractions that can draw your child away from reading. You may want to use appropriate reading strategies for your child’s age in order to get him or her interested in reading.
For babies and children aged three and below, you might want to purchase books that have a strong connection to concrete objects, since very young children often have a hard time understanding abstract concepts. Try buying the book El bebe descubre…los juguetes, which is a picture-book about toys, written by Baggott Stella (http://www.californiaspanishbooks.com/prod_info.asp?id=204372). It is part of a series of some of the best Spanish language books for babies, which titles begin with”El bebe descubre”.
This and much more beautiful books are available at the best California Bookstore.

Learn Spanish-Books and dictionaries recommendations
Posted on | March 26, 2010 | No Comments
Good Spanish dictionaries provide an excellent starting point. The University of Chicago’s Spanish-English dictionary is a staple of linguistic education, and is recommended by teachers of language programs all over the world. However, do not be misleading by the deceptively narrow title: this book also contains an English-Spanish section for those who need to do translation in the opposite direction. The definitions are brief but thorough, and also direct you towards many useful idiomatic expressions. This is also a very convenient volume, being about the size and weight of a typical paperback novel.
It also helps to buy a book that instructs you in practical Spanish writing. One of the best Spanish books for beginners is Saber escribir, which is put out by the Instituto Cervantes. It features guides for various types of correspondence and other writing. You can also try to buy its companion, Saber hablar, which features practical guides for verbal Spanish. You can learn how to set up appointments, ask for directions, and other useful conversational templates.
If you truly want to get a feel for a language, however, you must go beyond dictionaries and exercise books. In other words, it also makes sense to read creative works written in that language. You can start with poetry. A poem can usually be read in one sitting, so you do not have to remember a plot over several reading sessions, while at the same time wrestling with the language. Pablo Neruda (from Chile) and Federico García Lorca (from Spain) are popular and interesting choices. You may even find that you have just gained something in common with Spanish-speaking friends, or just people who have an appreciation for international literature. Pablo Neruda’s Cien sonetos de amor (http://www.californiaspanishbooks.com/prod_info.asp?id=136530) is an inspiration to lovers and poets everywhere. Relatively recent Spanish poets tend to be easier to read than the older ones. Try those poets before moving on to, say, Cervantes himself.
If you feel up to reading a novel, try Laura Esquivel’s Como agua para chocolate (http://www.californiaspanishbooks.com/prod_info.asp?id=136628). The Spanish in this novel is relatively simple in terms of vocabulary and sentence structure. The novel’s engaging, romantic story is a bonus to your reading experience, and the wonderful recipes incorporated into the book’s structure are a nice plus if you like cooking, or are just trying to work up an appetite. It is a very fun way to learn Spanish for pleasure, as well as practicality.
For something more challenging, try out the works of Jose Luis Borges, such as his anthologies Ficciones (http://www.californiaspanishbooks.com/prod_info.asp?id=138812) or El aleph (http://www.californiaspanishbooks.com/prod_info.asp?id=137645). Both of these books are collections of short stories. However, Borges has an elaborate, playful writing style that requires a relatively advanced level of Spanish comprehension in order to be appreciated, despite the brevity of the works in these books.
Of course, you might want to branch out into the other dialects and languages in Spain, such as Catalán. In that case, you might want to try a learning package such as Catalán sin esfuerza (http://www.californiaspanishbooks.com/prod_info.asp?id=178888). This package is somewhat more expensive than a plain book or dictionary, but it is a complete learning package that can help you learn the language with just half an hour of time per day. However, it is recommended that you have a high degree of fluency in Castilian Spanish before you try out packages like this one.
At californiaspanishbooks.com, you can find a great many books to help you in your quest to learn Spanish, no matter what your level of proficiency is. You can order the best dictionaries, or find books of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction that both suit your interest and bring you closer to Spanish culture.
